Nate’s mom and dad helped clean up the mess in the entry of their home, somehow knowing to not ask a bunch of questions at that time. Nonie didn’t say anything when she’d awoken to the sound of the slamming front door, except that she was going across the street to talk to Gabrielle. Nate didn’t know how she could have known the man was Ramai, what her having a gift meant, or how much it allowed her to understand, but the look she gave Nate as she was closing the front door behind her told him she knew exactly who’d been in the doorway just moments before.

The area they’d been cleaning now smelled like disinfectant instead of vomit, but Nate could still see it all over the floor and splattered on the walls as he stood over the area where he’d gotten sick, just like it had never been cleaned. He knew it wasn’t really there, but he also realized he’d never forget the sight. Not because he’d never seen his own vomit before, but because it was forced out of him by Satan, himself.

“Hey,” his mom said as she put her arm around him.

He looked down at her as she smiled, though it looked forced. She was worried, and the smile wasn’t enough to convince him otherwise. He was going to have to tell them what had happened at some point, he just didn’t know when, and didn’t want it to be right then.

“Are you okay?”

Nate smiled at his mom, but he was sure his looked as weak as hers had.

She placed the back of her hand to his forehead, checking for a temperature.

Nate reached for her hand and brought it down from his head. “I’m fine, but I need to clean myself up now. I’m going to take a shower.” Nate kissed the back of her hand before turning toward the stairs.

“Do you feel like eating something?” his dad asked as he leaned against the framing of the opening to the kitchen. He’d been in that same spot since he took the cleaning supplies back to the kitchen, just studying Nate from a distance like he was trying to figure out if Nate was losing his mind. Worry was clear in his eyes as well. “I can make you some soup or something.” The worry in his dad’s voice was clear.

Nate turned and nodded as he started up the stairs. “Sure, dad. Sounds great.”

“I’ll call you when it’s ready,” he said, then pushed away from the archway and disappeared into the kitchen.

Nate couldn’t wait to get to the bathroom, wanting to put as much distance from the questioning, worried eyes of his parents, and the entry where he’d just met the devil, as he could. He closed the door behind him and turned on the shower, then brushed his teeth so long and hard that when he spit, what came out of his mouth was tinted red. He rinsed his mouth with cold water to help stop
